Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Independent Contractor

Dr. Shelle Welty is a licensed psychologist at UCEBT. She has earned degrees in multiple disciplines, including the natural sciences, spirituality, and psychology. The training obtained in each discipline, along with their integration, provides her clients with a holistic treatment approach. Dr. Welty has worked with patients in both long-term and acute hospital settings, foster children and their support systems, veterans, victims of sexual assault, college students, athletes, humanitarian aid workers, and refugees. Prior to her work at UCEBT, she spent a decade working in college mental health, where she was invested in improving the lives of students through multiple roles--as a therapist, a consultant to university faculty and staff, and a professor.

Dr. Welty is trained in multiple modalities of trauma treatment and in treatments that build relational skills, improved thought processes, and intentionality toward values-based living. Additionally, she has completed extensive training in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and currently offers ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. She values above all else the collaboration with her clients that allows them to reach the outcomes they value most. Her clinical interests include the treatment of trauma, group psychotherapy, spirituality, and the growth of resilience in those who live and/or work in chronically stressful environments.

Books:

The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk M.D. -  In "The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel van der Kolk M.D. uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. He explores innovative treatments—from neurofeedback and meditation to sports, drama, and yoga—that offer new paths to recovery by activating the brain’s natural neuroplasticity."

Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World by Mark Williams and Danny Penman - This book "reveals a set of simple yet powerful practices that you can incorporate into daily life to help break the cycle of anxiety, stress, unhappiness, and exhaustion. The book is based on Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). MBCT revolves around a straightforward form of mindfulness meditation which takes just a few minutes a day for the full benefits to be revealed."

What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Oprah Winfrey and Bruce D. Perry -- This audiobook discusses a "subtle but profound shift in our approach to trauma, and it’s one that allows us to understand our pasts in order to clear a path to our future - opening the door to resilience and healing in a proven, powerful way."

Apps:

Headspace - "At Headspace, we like to think of meditation as exercise for the brain. Through meditation, we can build up areas of our brain and actually rewire it to enhance positive traits like focus and decision making and diminish the less positive ones like fear and stress. Most importantly, this means there is a possibility to change your brain for the better in a way that is long-lasting."

Sanvello - "The #1 app for stress, anxiety, and depression with over 3 million users. It’s created by clinical experts based on proven therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness meditation."

UCLA Mindful - "With this easy-to-use app, you can practice mindfulness meditation anywhere, anytime with the guidance of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center."
